Front-Closure Bra Fit Guide: How to Measure and Find Your Size

A front-closure bra fastens at the centre front instead of at the back. That one change makes it easier to put on, gives a smooth back line under clothes, and — in posture-support styles — lets the back panel sit flat and supportive. But the fit rules are slightly different from a regular bra, so here is how to get it right.

Step 1: Measure yourself

All you need is a soft measuring tape and a mirror. Wear a light, unpadded bra, stand straight, and breathe normally.

  1. Band (underbust): Measure firmly around your ribcage, directly under your bust. Keep the tape level and snug — not tight. Note the number in inches.
  2. Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape level and not squashing anything. Note this number too.
  3. Find your starting size: Your band size is your underbust measurement, rounded to the nearest even number. Your cup size comes from the difference between your bust and band measurements — roughly one inch per cup size (1" = A, 2" = B, 3" = C, 4" = D, and so on).

Treat this as your starting point, not a final verdict. Fit varies between styles, so always check the fit once the bra is on.

Step 2: Check the fit

Put the bra on, fasten the front clasp, and run through this checklist:

  • The band sits level all the way around and feels firm without digging in. If it rides up at the back, try a smaller band size.
  • The front clasp lies flat against your sternum with no gaping or pulling. The clasp should close without a struggle — if you have to force it, the band or cup is too small.
  • No spilling or gaping. Your bust should sit comfortably inside the cups, with no overflow at the top or sides and no empty fabric.
  • Straps stay put without digging into your shoulders. They should carry a little of the weight; the band does most of the work.
  • The back panel lies smooth against your back with no bunching or rolling.

Between sizes? Go with the larger band size for comfort, and check the cup fit after. A bra that is slightly too tight in the band will never feel right, however good the cups look.

Front-closure vs back-closure

Front-closure Back-closure
Fastening Centre-front clasp Hooks at the back
Best for Easy dressing, smooth back line Widest size and style range
Back look Clean, uninterrupted panel Strap and hook line visible
Adjustment Usually fixed band, adjustable straps Multiple hook positions

Front-closure bras suit anyone who finds reaching behind difficult, and anyone who wants a smooth look under fitted tops. The trade-off is less band adjustability, which is why getting the band measurement right matters more.

What about posture-support styles?

Posture-support bras, like our Posture Support Front-Closure Seamless Wireless Bra, use a shaped back panel and supportive straps designed to encourage an upright, shoulders-back posture while you wear them. Think of it as a design feature that supports good posture habits — not a medical device, and not a substitute for exercise or medical advice. If you have a back or shoulder condition, speak to a clinician before relying on any garment for support.

Caring for your bra

  • Hand wash in cool water with mild detergent, and dry flat. Machine washing shortens the life of the elastic and the front clasp.
  • Rotate between two or three bras so the elastic recovers between wears.
  • Fasten the clasp before washing so it does not snag other items.

Quick answers

Can I wear a front-closure bra every day?
Yes — if the fit is right. A well-fitting front-closure bra is as comfortable for daily wear as any other style.

Do front-closure bras work for larger busts?
Yes, provided the band is supportive and the cups fully contain the bust. Wider bands and broader straps help. Check the size options on each product page.

How do I know if the band is too loose?
If you can slide two fingers easily under the band, or the band rides up when you raise your arms, try a smaller band size.
